Moving house often produces more waste than a building can absorb through its normal collections. In Luxembourg City there are several routes: ordinary collections, official bags for an occasional excess of residual waste, the centre de ressources, bulky waste, and the SuperDrecksKëscht for hazardous substances. The right approach is to decide, before moving day, where each category will go.
Why can a house move block the whole room?
Because the containers are sized for the building's normal rhythm.
A few large boxes, some unsorted bags and an abandoned piece of furniture are enough to make the bins unreachable for the other occupants. From there the problem feeds itself: new bags are put on the floor because there is already no room left.
Can the blue bags absorb the excess?
Only for the packaging accepted in the Valorlux stream.
A blue bag is not a general clear-out bag.
The City's official glossary makes it possible to check where a material goes when in doubt.
And if the black bin is not enough?
The City provides official white bags for an occasional excess of residual waste.
The price displayed by the City has to be checked at the date of publication; at the last check of the file it was 5 euros per bag.
Above all, these bags have to be put out in line with the City's collection rules. The "Sortie et Rentrée" bin service does not cover them: leaving a white bag at the back of the room on the assumption that the contractor will take it out with the containers may therefore simply move the problem elsewhere.
What can be taken to the centre de ressources?
Free access is reserved to residents of Luxembourg City and Strassen.
A personal card is required. It may be issued to adult residents on presentation of the items requested by the City. Bulky waste is accepted in small quantities, and access with a trailer or a van depends on the spaces available.
These conditions therefore have to be checked before hiring a vehicle and turning up with the whole flat in the back.
And paint, solvents, batteries or other hazardous waste?
They go neither in the blue bag, nor in the white bag, nor in ordinary waste.
The City directs these materials to the SuperDrecksKëscht.
A house move or small works produce exactly the kind of leftovers that are easily forgotten until the last evening.
What part can the landlord or the syndic play?
Informing people in time.
When a departure is known, a simple message can recall the waste streams, access to the centre de ressources, bulky waste and the need to leave nothing behind in the common parts.
This information can be sent by hand or triggered automatically from a notified house move. The tool is not the solution; the right timing of the information is.
